Pallet Glossary

2-way Entry Pallet |
A pallet with un-notched solid runners allowing entry only from the ends. | |
4-way Entry Pallet |
A pallet that has entry from all four sides. | |
| All Hardwood Pallet | Wood from a broad-leafed tree species. | |
| All Softwood Pallet | Wood from the coniferous or needle bearing species of trees. | |
| Block Pallet | Type of pallet with blocks and stringers between the pallet decks instead of runners. | |
Box |
A shipping container that requires

| Combo Pallet | A repaired pallet that may have a combination of new runners and recycled decking or vice versa. | |
| Collapsible Container Assembly |
A corrugated box assembled onto a pallet using staples to create a single-use shipping container. | |
| Double-Face Pallet | A pallet with top and bottom deck boards. | |
| Double-Wing Pallet |
A pallet with top and bottom deck boards extending beyond the edges of the stringers or runners. | |
| Drum Pallet | A pallet used primarily to ship drums
on and is usually made with a heavy specification. |

| Dunnage |
Lumber, soft or hard wood, cut to a specific size for shipping and handling. | |
| Euro Pallet | Pallets that are used primarily for transporting goods in Europe. Most popular size is 1200mm x 800 mm. | |
| Exchange Pallet | A pallet intended for use among a designated group of shippers and receivers where ownership of the pallet is transferred with the ownership of the unit load; common pool pallet. | |
| Expendable Pallet | A pallet intended for a series of handlings during a single trip from shipper to receiver; it is then disposed. (See Shipping Pallet.) | |
| Flush Pallet | A pallet with deck boards flush with runners, stringer boards, or blocks along the ends. | |
| GMA Pallet | (Grocery Manufacturers Association); one of the few "standard" pallets and is 48" long x 40"wide with standard specifications for the bill of materials and configuration of the top and bottom deck boards. | |
| Non-Reversible Pallet | A pallet with bottom deck board configuration different from the top deck. | |
| Notch | A cut out of the runner to allow the tow motor to enter the pallet on all four sides. | |
| OSB | (Oriented Standard Board); an engineered mat-formed panel product made of strands, flakes or wafers, sliced from small diameter, round wood logs, layered for a specific thickness and bonded with an exterior- type adhesive under heat and pressure. | |
| Panel Deck Pallet | A pallet constructed with composite or structural panel top deck. | |
Plastic Pallet |
A pallet made of plastic materials. | |
| Ply | A thin sheet of wood used in making plywood. | |
| Plywood | A mat-formed panel made of hardwood or softwood, formed by a number of plies glued together in alternating layers, to increase the strength and stability. | |
| Recycled Pallet | A pallet or container that has been used, discarded, salvaged, and repaired to pass through the cycle of use again. | |
| Reusable Pallet |
A pallet designed to be used for more than one trip. | |
| Reversible Pallet | A pallet with identical top and bottom decks. | |
| Runner Type Pallet | A pallet that has a solid piece of wood, the runner, which the deck boards are fastened to. | |
| Shipping Pallet | Pallet designed to be used for a single
one-way trip from shipper
to receiver; it is then disposed; (See Expendable Pallet.) |

| Single-Face Pallet | A pallet that has only top deck boards fastened to the runners. | |
| Single Wing Pallet | A pallet with overhang of deck board from the outside edge of the stringer to increase unit-load area. | |
| Skid | A pallet without bottom deck boards. | |
| Solid Deck Pallet |
A pallet that has a solid top decking or full coverage. | |
| Warehouse Pallet | A double-face multiple trip returnable pallet intended for general warehouse use. | |
