| Beveled Runner |
Runners that have the bottom edges cut
out at 45 degree angles to allow the handling equipment to function

A groove that is shaved into the edge
boards to allow the tow motor to enter the pallet with ease. |
| Clipped Corners |
Gives the pallet a rounded shape by cutting

| Cut Out |
Notches, grooves, etc. that are cut out
of wood material to provide support for strapping, banding, tow motor
entry, etc. |
| Cut Stock |
Material cut-to-size and used to assemble
pallets, crates or boxes; used to assemble packaging around products
for extra support during shipping. |
| Deck board (top deck board, bottom deck board, decking,
deck boards) |
Element or component of a pallet deck,
oriented perpendicular to the runner or stringer board |
| Double-Faced Pallet |
A pallet with top and bottom deck boards. |
| Double-Stringer Pallet |
A recycled pallet utilizing two stringers placed side by side. The second stringer provides added support due to the weakened original. |
| Double-Wing Pallet |
A pallet with top and bottom deck boards
extending beyond
the edges of the stringers or runners. |
| Drum Pallet |
A pallet used primarily to ship drums
on and is
usually made with a heavy specification. |
| Dunnage |
Lumber, soft or hard wood, cut to a specific
size to accomodate shipping products or material. |
| Euro Pallet |
Pallets that are used primarily for transporting
goods in Europe. Most popular size is 1200mm x 800 mm. |
| Exchange Pallet |
A pallet intended for use among a designated
group of shippers and receivers where ownership of the pallet is
transferred with the ownership
of the unit load; common pool pallet. |
| Expendable Pallet |
A pallet intended for a series of handlings
during a single trip from shipper to receiver; it is then disposed.

| Flush Pallet |
A pallet with deck boards flush with runners,
stringer boards, or
blocks along the ends. |
| Fumigation |
A type of process of treating wood materials
to rid of infestation. |
Frame
|
Pieces of wood constructed in a square
or rectangular structure used to separate and/or support material
stacked on pallets. |
| GMA Pallet |
(Grocery Manufacturers Association); one
of the few "standard" pallets and is 48" long x 40"
wide with standard specifications for the bill of materials and configuration
of the top and bottom deck boards. |
| Hardwood |
Wood from broad-leaved species of trees (not necessarily hard or dense)

Heat Treatment
(HT)
|
Process of raising the core temperature of the wood material to ensure the extermination of harmful insects that may infest wood. |
| Heavy Pallet |
Referred to as permanent, in-plant or
warehouse pallets; used to transport materials from one part of the
plant to another. |

From timber or logs prepared for marketable
use as material. |
| Methyl Bromide |
Chemical used in treating wood materials
to rid of infestation of insects. |
| Nesting |
A way of stacking pallets to best utilize
space for shipping.

| Non-Reversible Pallet |
A pallet with bottom deck board configuration
different
from the top deck. |
| OSB |
(Oriented Standard Board); an engineered
mat-formed panel product made of strands, flakes or wafers, sliced
from small diameter,
round wood logs, layered
for a specific thickness and bonded with an exterior- type adhesive under heat
and pressure.

Platform used to aid in shipping of products. |
| Panel Deck Pallet |
A pallet constructed with composite or
structural panel top
deck. |
| Plastic Pallet |
A pallet made of plastic materials. |
| Plug Pallet |
Pallet that has been repaired by using
plugs, such as a block next to a cracked runner. |
| Ply |
A thin sheet of wood used in making plywood. |
| Plywood |
A mat-formed panel made of hardwood or
softwood, formed by a number of plies glued together in alternating
layers, to increase the strength and stability. |
| Recycled Pallet |
A pallet or container that has been used,
discarded, salvaged, and repaired to pass through the cycle of use
again. |
| Reusable Pallet |
A pallet designed to be used for more
than one trip. |
| Reversible Pallet |
A pallet with identical top and bottom
decks. |
| Runner |
Synonomous to Stringer. Longitudinal pieces
of lumber that run perpendicular to the deck boards to provide stability
and sturdiness for the pallet. |
| Runner Type Pallet |
A pallet that has a solid piece of wood,
the runner, which
the deck boards are fastened to. |
Shipping Pallet
|
Pallet designed to be used for a single
one-way trip from shipper
to receiver; it is then disposed;

| Single-Face Pallet |
A pallet that has only top deck boards
fastened to the runners. |
| Single Wing Pallet |
A pallet with overhang of deck board from
the outside edge
of the stringer to increase unit-load area. |
| Skid |
A pallet without bottom deck boards. Generally,
the top deck is supported by means of runners or blocks and stringers. |
| Softwood |
Wood from coniferous or needle-bearing trees (not necessarily soft or low
density)

Solid Deck Pallet
|
A pallet that has a solid top decking
or full coverage. |
| Strapping |
Steel or plastic banding that will secure
the product to the pallet. |
| Stringer |
Synonomous to Runner. Continuous, longitudinal,
solid or notched beam-component of the pallet used to support deck
components, often identified by location as the outside or center
stringer |
| True 4way Pallet |
Block pallets; allow the tow motor to
enter from all sides without
having to use a notch. |
| Warehouse Pallet |
A double-face multiple trip returnable
pallet intended for general
warehouse use. |
