Hardwood
& Softwood Lumber
Lumber, hardwood or softwood, comes in a variety of lengths, thickness, and widths. The utility and purpose of lumber for shipping, supporting, and handling materials, involves numerous uses that vary with each customer application.
Cut Stock is wood material
cut-to-size and used to assemble pallets, crating,
boxes, etc. Some companies
in the manufacturing sector often buy cut stock
to assemble packaging around their particular product for shipment. This
cut stock serves as extra support during shipping to help prevent damage.
Dunnage is lumber that is specifically cut to size for use as support in shipping and handling. It is used, for example, in the steel industry for separator pieces between steel sheets or steel coils. Depending on the customer’s application, dunnage is made from hardwood or softwood. Additionally, it may have special cut outs, such as Banding Notch and clipped corners.
Lumber is treated to control the spread of harmful insects that may infest wood packaging material and be transported to other parts of the world. There are only a few acceptable methods for treating exported wood, including Heat Treatment and a chemical process called Fumigation , which uses methyl bromide. Untreated lumber is mostly used only within the United States. Please see our section on Wood Treatment Processes.
